Multiply $400 by a bedroom in every one of 1,200 units and the math on "just matching the old system" falls apart fast. The wireless devices were a smart choice the day they were installed. So the recommendation was not "replace everything" or "chase parts." It was to replace the systems in half the buildings with new addressable hardwired systems, then harvest the still-good wireless devices out of those buildings to bring the remaining buildings up to code. The owner gets modern, supportable systems where it counts and uses the salvageable hardware instead of paying secondary-market prices for parts no one makes anymore.

If a contractor tells you a required device is "discontinued," that is a real replacement trigger, not a sales tactic. But the right answer is rarely all-or-nothing. Salvaging working devices to extend coverage is often the difference between a planned upgrade and a budget emergency.

2. Proprietary Panels and End-of-Life

The second trap is the panel itself. When a manufacturer declares a panel end-of-life, two things happen: parts dry up, and authorized programming support shrinks. The clean answer is a supervised cellular or internet communicator, often dual-path, so a dropped path is flagged within hours.
