The Foundation

Yes, your computers could technically run on Wi-Fi. But should they?

Running a business requires speed, stability, and structure. That's what hardwired cabling gives you. Wi-Fi is fine for guests, mobile users, and hard-to-wire locations. Not for the backbone of your business.

Low voltage cabling connects phones, cameras, access control, TVs, computers, Wi-Fi access points, and anything else with a network jack. Without it, everything floats on Wi-Fi — and that\'s fine until it isn\'t.

Common Headaches We See

No labeling.

Can't tell what goes where? We frequently trace old, unlabeled or poorly labeled lines that some other contractor ran. Costs time and money — avoid it with a clean install.

Wrong cable type.

We've seen many contractors run whatever wire they can get at a local hardware store. Sometimes that means Cat5e cable when the location could use the speed of Cat6. On other occasions, they ran riser cable when the environment dictates plenum. That's a serious code violation and potential safety risk.

Other trades or handyman installs.

If they aren't wiring contractors, chances they don't understand how to properly run, label, or test low voltage cabling. Doesn't matter how cheap it was — if it's wrong, it'll cost you double later.

No plan.

We've seen buildings with poorly placed network rooms that leave areas unserviceable due to length constraints. Simply put, not planning is planning to fail.

Copper has limits. We design and install fiber optic backbone systems for hospitals, office campuses, warehouses, and multi-tenant buildings across Tampa Bay.

Most fiber optic installation projects come down to one question: single-mode vs multimode fiber. Multimode (OM3 and OM4) handles the majority of in-building backbone connections under 550 meters. Single-mode (OS2) is what you need for campus fiber between separate structures, carrier demarc extensions, or any run where distance or bandwidth rules out copper.

We do our own fusion splicing on-site. No subcontracting the fiber work to a third party. Every fiber strand gets tested with an OTDR, and you get the results. We terminate to LC, SC, or MPO connectors depending on your switch hardware, and every fiber patch panel gets labeled and documented in your as-built package.

Fiber used to be overkill for small commercial buildings. Not anymore. The cost difference between a 12-strand OM4 backbone and pulling multiple copper tie cables is often negligible, and fiber gives you 10 Gbps today with a clear upgrade path to 40G and 100G down the road.

However, if your building has cable in it, chances are, we've designed and installed a solution for a similar property. Warehouses, retail, government buildings, call centers — we've seen it all.

Absolutely. If you know you need wiring but aren't sure what you need, call or email, and we will work with you to design a low voltage cabling solution that will fit your needs. Some projects need only a handful of Cat5e cables. Others need 1000+ Cat6a and site-wide fiber. We will help you determine what you need.

TSS USA provides clear labeling for all cables, certified test results, and post-install as-builts for all of our projects. This shouldn't even need an answer. However, all too often, low voltage cabling contractors don't include these necessary services.

Cat5e can still support gigabit speeds and may be fine for light-duty networks, but it’s quickly being phased out in many commercial builds. Most of our clients choose Cat6 or Cat6A, which are better suited for modern bandwidth demands, Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications, and long-term network growth. They are the same thing. Network cable installer, data cabling contractor, and fiber optic contractor are all terms used to describe a low voltage professional who installs structured cabling systems. The key difference is scope: a data cabling contractor may focus on copper runs (Cat6, Cat6A), while a fiber optic contractor specializes in single mode and multimode fiber backbone installations. TSS USA handles both under one roof.

Single-mode fiber uses a 9-micron core and carries light over long distances, 10 kilometers or more. Multimode has a larger 50-micron core and works for shorter runs under 550 meters. Most commercial buildings use OM3 or OM4 multimode for backbone runs between network closets. Single-mode (OS2) is required for campus fiber between separate buildings, carrier demarc extensions, and anything over 550 meters. We install both and help you pick the right type based on your actual distances and bandwidth needs.

Fusion splicing permanently joins two fiber optic strands by melting the glass cores together with an electric arc. It creates a near-zero loss connection, significantly better than mechanical splices or pre-terminated assemblies. We perform all fusion splicing in-house with calibrated splicers and verify every joint with an OTDR (optical time-domain reflectometer). You need fusion splicing for long backbone runs, building entry points, and anywhere pre-terminated cables won't reach or don't exist in the right length.

Conduit sizing comes down to three things: the number of cables, each cable’s outside diameter (OD), and the conduit type. NEC Chapter 9 limits most runs to 40% fill for three or more conductors. A 1" EMT holds 14 Cat6 cables at 40% fill; Cat6a’s thicker jacket drops that to 8. We built a free conduit fill and conduit size calculator that handles mixed cable types and auto-recommends the minimum compliant trade size when your fill exceeds NEC limits.
